This year the Cardinals had a pretty good spring. Considering they won 20 games, the most in their Grapefruit League play since 1998. This spring started off with one huge setback. Alex Reyes (MLB’s number 13 prospect) had a tear in his elbow that has caused him to be sidelined for the entire 2017 season.

Though the Cardinals got off to a disappointing start they seemed to have done a lot of things right. Last season they were plagued with fundamental errors on defense and the base pads. A large part of the 20 spring training wins were a product of good fundamentals.

Jose Martinez, a cardinal outfielder who got a spot on the Major League roster batted a nice .400 during spring. He will be the Cardinals 4th outfielder off the bench. Dexter Fowler, the Cardinals big offseason signing seemed to fit in just right with the ball club.

This spring was important because the Cardinals have something to prove, they missed the postseason last season and their biggest rival took home the World Series. The Cardinals have the pieces and tools needed for the long season ahead but they just have to prove they can be consistent and use their baseball fundamentals.

The Cardinals opening series was at Busch Stadium against the Chicago Cubs. They only took home one win out of three games but there is no need for concern just yet.

During game one the Cardinals led the game 1-0, then in the bottom of the eighth inning Randal Grichuck hit a two run homer into the Cardinal bullpen giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. But then in the top of the ninth Wilson Contreras the Cubs young catcher hit a 3 run bomb into the left field bleachers, tying the game. The Cardinals found themselves with the bases loaded and Grichuck at the plate. He hit a missile over the head of Schwarber in left field and won the game.

Game two of the series was a low scoring affair, the Cubs won 2-1. The scoring started in the 4th inning with Jason Heyward getting a bloop single that scored Addison Russell and then Javier Baez followed up with a bunt that got Wilson Contreras across the plate. In the 7th inning the score was 2-1 and Matt Adams was at the plate. He hit a long fly ball out to center field that would have tied the game but Albert Almora robbed his home run in a clutch defensive play. Ultimately the Cubs held off the Cardinals and grabbed the victory.

Game three was going good for the Cardinals until the eighth inning when the Cardinals had a 4-3 lead Kyle Schwarber hit a three run homerun to secure a comfortable lead for the Cubs, ultimately giving them the victory.

Though the Cardinals only won one game out of three they still kept each game close and did not lose the lead in game three until the eighth inning. The Cardinals next series will be against the reds which will be fairly easy considering the reds are in rebuilding mode. You can probably expect a sweep or the Cardinals taking two out of three games.
